Former striker Robin van Persie is backing Erik ten Hag to take Manchester United back to the "top level" after an encouraging debut campaign at Old Trafford so far - but warns patience will be needed.

The Dutchman, who moved to Old Trafford from Ajax last April, has transformed the club's fortunes, turning them back into genuine top-four contenders and ending their six-year wait for a trophy. The Reds beat Newcastle United 2-0 in last month's Carabao Cup final to clinch their first piece of silverware since 2017.

Although United have experienced a few bumps in the road this season, they have made undisputed progress, inspired by Ten Hag's world-class managerial credentials. He has restored standards, implemented a winning culture and given United an identity again.

Although the Reds briefly looked as though they would be capable of challenging Arsenal and neighbours Manchester City for the Premier League title this season, that ship has since sailed, meaning they are focused on securing a top-four finish and adding two more trophies to their collection, given they are still competing in both the FA Cup and the Europa League this term. Ending the season with three trophies and Champions League qualification for next season would represent an outstanding debut campaign for Ten Hag.

Despite the success the Dutchman has achieved so far this season, Van Persie still believes patience will be key if his fellow countryman is to deliver further honours.

Asked what success would look like for United between now and the end of the season, Van Persie said: "Trophies, of course. He has got one already, which is great, and it takes a bit of pressure off. It gives him extra time, which he has earned.

"He is doing a great job. You can see the way they play is fun and is intense, but it is from his philosophy, his structure and I am pretty sure that if they give him time, which I hope they will give him a lot of time, that Manchester United can be back at the top level and on a consistent level, challenging for lots of trophies.

"Now that they have got the first one in... to win the league this year is a bit too much to ask at the moment. But the main thing for any top team is to be able to compete against anyone and this is what they have been proving this season."
